Canstruction Food Drive

The National Junior Honor Society Can Food Drive was a great way to start the holiday season. It brought together the whole school, and it empowered our community as well as local citizens. Each homeroom class contributed by collecting and donating boxes while incorporating a fun “Canstruction” design.  We as students joined together as a community to help feed locals in need. The food bank that we gave to will act as a storage and distribution center for canned and packaged foods. Each person in need of food can go to this food bank and request a bag of food.

Students formed a chain around the block leading to the church food pantry. We all passed the canned food in an efficient and fast paced manner. There were bags of cans near the gate of the school, and each student picked up a bag and passed it along in a chain movement until we got to the church. Ms. Sofio (NJHS Coordinator at Walter Reed) and parents supervised and encouraged the students as they passed the cans along the line. Not only did NJHS members contribute, the school cheerleaders also pitched in by holding colorful signs and cheering us on. We also had some entertainment from the fabulous 7th grade Show Choir. Overall, the can drive was a very eye-opening experience to help people in need. Together, the school came as one to support our local community. - Katherine Bernstein’19 And Sabrina Zousman’19

Thank you so much to Ms.Sofio for putting together this incredible event. Without you, this experience for the students of Walter Reed Middle School wouldn’t be possible.
