Detention Monster: Definitive Edition

Updated: Sep 25, 2019

“Alright Boss, she’s ready to go.” A blond lady said talking to a man engulfed in shadows. The woman was taking notes on a small notepad, looking over a creature that had marks on the limbs that looked like stitches. “First we gotta make him unconscious to transport.” She said. Then, she carefully used a syringe to inject the creature with a strange liquid. She bent over to inject the creature with the liquid, but suddenly, the beast jerked awake and as if aware, attacked everything in sight, leaving nothing alive or unbroken.

10 Years Later

“Welcome to North Hollywood Elementary School!” a bright voice said as James entered the school for the first time. James had been home schooled his whole life and he was starting 5thgrade in a public school or the first time. “Classrooms are around the corner and parents you are all invited to the teacher’s lounge for breakfast!” James’ parents took him to the classroom. His mom nudged him toward the door. “Come on James, it’ll be great!” his mom said, pushing him further. James was shy. He had never made any friends on his own and his best friend Nicholas was just inside that classroom. He finally went inside the classroom and was immediately greeted by his teacher, Mrs. Oak, who said, “Good morning, you must be James! Have a seat and make yourself comfortable.” After a few hours of introductions, icebreakers, and getting textbooks, James was starting to feel drowsy. His eyelids were feeling heavy, he was feeling sluggish and by the time the teacher started reading from the textbook James was fast asleep. When he woke up Mrs. Oak was standing right in front of his desk with an expression not as pleasant as the one she had when he walked in. “James.” Mrs. Oak said taking a deep breath in. “I know this is your first day of school, but I’m going to have to send you to the principal’s office.” James got up out of his chair and felt all the staring eyes piercing the back of his head. After what felt like hours of walking to the principal’s office he finally got to the door. When he stepped inside, he saw the principal on his computer writing something with his reading glasses on. “Ah, come right in,” he said, closing his computer and taking his glasses off. He had a nameplate on his desk that had his name “Principal Henry John”. James sat down on the chair and his head started to get hot. “Your teacher, Mrs. Oak, called me and said that it was your first day of school and you had fallen asleep in class.” He told him as he scribbled something on a sheet of paper. “I am very sorry, James,” he said as though mimicking Mrs. Oak. “I am going to have to send you to detention,” he told him, coolly handing him a pink slip. “Please report to room 703 afterschool.” James walked out of the room sulking as he dragged his feet back to his classroom. “Ah James, you’re back!” Mrs. Oak said as she walked up to him with papers in her hands. “I’m very sorry that I had to send you to the principal’s office. I would get in trouble if anyone found out I didn’t,” she told him. “Its okay,” James replied.  From then on, the day was filled with dread for James. He had never been to detention and never wanted to be there in the first place. Once the final bell rang, James’ classmates burst out of the classroom. James was the last one out as he picked up his bag and headed for 703 across the school. As he walked into the hallway that the detention room was in, a lump formed in his throat. He opened the door to room 703 and turned on the light. Two lights flickered on before one popped and sent smoke into the air. He gulped as he came to the realization that this was the place he’d be spending the next half an hour in. The door opened behind him. Principal John came through. “Ah, James you’re here. Take a seat,” he told James as he came pointed at one of the old wooden desks. As he pulled out a seat dust fell off of the desk. “I will be doing work in a nearby classroom, and if I find you escaping or you’re not here after 30 minutes there will be serious consequences.” He left the room and checked through the window on the door to see if he was trying anything. Once Principal John was out of sight James heard a growling from the dark half of the classroom. He squinted to see what it was and a pair of bright yellow eyes started to move toward him.
