Tips and Tricks for a Great Gingerbread House!

It’s that time of year again, the weeks of just sitting and getting through things. School, homework, extra curriculars, even sleep! We’re all just biding our time for one thing. The Holidays!!!!

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or any number of others, you’re no doubt really excited for the three week break! I am too, and I wanted to share some tricks and tips for one of my favorite holiday activities! (Based on my title I’m sure you already know.) Making Gingerbread Houses!

1. My first tip on how to make a great gingerbread house, is to get a kit with a starter base. This will honestly just make your life easier. If you don’t know, or if you haven’t ever made a gingerbread house before, a starter base is a sheet of plastic that has holes for the gingerbread pieces to go through. It makes it so your house is a lot less likely to fall over. A real lifesaver at moments.

2. One trick, if your kit doesn’t come with a piping bag, use a ziplock one instead! All you have to do is scoop some of the icing in one of the bags and cut a hole in one of the bottom corners. Voila! A perfectly good piping bag. (Just make sure you don’t overfill the bag or cut a whole that’s too big.)

3. Another tip, is that kits usually come with little candy, or just kinds you don’t like. If you're like me, and you want your house to taste as good as it looks, I would suggest starting to rummage through your pantry for some chocolate chips and mini marshmallows.

4. One trick I like to use is if I mess up piping the icing (which happens quite a bit by the way) my go to tool is a toothpick. They are surprisingly helpful when it comes to fixing that unintentional curve, or smoothing out that extra bit of icing. They aren’t necessary, but definitely useful.

5. One more tip, is to cut gumdrops or symmetrical gummies (if you have them) in half. That way if you don’t have a lot of them and are trying to line them along one of the gingerbread pieces, you can.

I really hope that you guys found these tips and tricks helpful. Remember that even though we’re in a pandemic, we all have a lot to be thankful for. Anyway, have an amazing holiday break fellow Reed students!

Nadya couldn’t wait. She was going all the way to Australia with her parents and her best friend, Charity, to see the Great Barrier Reef! They would do all kinds of amazing things when they got there.
