For the 2018-2019 school year, Walter Reed is celebrating 80 years since its establishment in September 1939. Having previously been named “North Hollywood Junior High”, the school changed its name in 1957 to “Walter Reed Junior High” in honor of a U.S. Army Major named Walter Reed who had a degree in medicine. He was a physician who discovered the cause of yellow fever. His work allowed other scientists to find a cure for yellow fever from 1901-1903, which was really important because the disease was delaying the completion of the Panama Canal and endangering a lot of people. Many places were built and named after him in his honor, such as the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, which is located in Maryland. Walter Reed is a successful middle school in California that contributes to the education of a great amount of students.
